If you suspect that unexplainable, strange events are happening in your home or business this may be the time to contact a professional paranormal investigative organization to assist you with your situation. This is the point where you will need to decide between all of the individuals, groups, and teams that now exist.

One group of ghost hunters made a public statement that, “Anyone can be a paranormal investigator.”  Unfortunately, with the field of afterlife studies having no standards, rules, or regulatory body to answer to, and with the low cost of equipment and free websites and social media platforms acting as a website, the statement is true. In an attempt to make your decision less of a strain, the EPC will leave you with some practical hints and advice. If remedying your situation is important to you, so should your choice of assistance.

1- How long have they been in existence?

Although the length of time that a team has been in operation is important, it is not the main indicator of how well that group will perform.  Those who have studied the fields of paranormal occurrences, ghosts, hauntings, and the afterlife in detail before forming a team or setting out as an individual investigator may well be worth contacting to see how they can help. After all, the Eidolon Project Canada had to have had its beginnings at some point in time. Do keep in mind, however, that with time. valuable experience is gained, such as evidence evaluation and analysis, their biases, and how well they function as a unit.

2- What is their primary platform for information? What does their website or page look like?

Many new groups have come into existence since the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly because they free time on their hands to binge on paranormal-based programming.  Facebook groups have permeated the web, often with misinformation and disinformation, or have posted videos, most of which are misrepresentative of what actual investigation is like.

When searching for a legitimate investigator, and you run across one of these groups. Carefully look to see if they represent the people that you want to invite into your home or business and investigating your case.  

3:  The EPC encourages you to look at the website of the group or individuals that you may be considering to handle your case.  Their website, in particular, their landing or home page can speak volumes about the perspective, conviction, and the methods of operations of the group.

 Be wary if an investigator or a “ghost-hunting” group has a “spooky/scary” or “childish” appearance or demeanor on their introductory page, their way of presenting themselves to the public.  Logos that contain creepy houses, cartoon ghosts, skulls, writing in dripping blood, graveyard scenes, or other “Halloweenish” media convey the mindset of the organization and may not be an ideal choice for helping you with a serious situation.  Many of these types of groups will jump at the chance to investigate your site, using your situation self-gratifiction . This is a situation when your first impression is usually correct.

4- What seems to be their over-all and end objective? 

It is difficult to determine exactly what a group’s objective is. Again, by reading the information they supply you can get a general idea of the type of interests that they have. For example, are they “Jacks of all trades”? This means, is their sole interest in paranormal activity related to the afterlife, ghosts, and hauntings, or do their areas of interest include subjects that you are not concerned with –  topics such as cryptozoology, UFOs, Big Foot, Orbs, or other diverse fields? As a rule, these groups spread themselves too thinly to invest the time and expertise that you may require. 

Another issue that is worth mentioning is the personal biases and beliefs that the group may have. These include whether or not they are “ghost fanatics”. you can determine so by looking at the information that they present. If almost everything is “proof” or “evidence” of a ghost, they are likely guilty of already being in the mindset that your home or business is haunted and all they have to do is produce evidence, however weak, to prove it. This is known as Expectation and Confirmation biases.

Some teams and individuals will approach your situation from a religious standpoint.  If you are so inclined, this may be the route that you wish to take. You need to know that it has been documented that approaching a ghost or other entity with religion as a first step results in the activity becoming stronger, and even violent as a result. Another trait to look out for is a group that has a “demonologist” on hand. The same results as mentioned above can encourage negative repercussions from the entity involved.

 Just as important as the insight of the purpose of a group is what their overall objective is once they have collected their data. Many are only investigating “scary” locations for self-gratification. The same can be said for the armchair hobbyist. They have no interest in contributing their finding to further the advancement of legitimate paranormal research. Ask yourself, are they honestly trying to help you and remedy your situation,  or,  are you being used as a source of excitement or entertainment or to provide themselves with an adrenaline/dopamine fix? 

Very point worthy is how they treat the ghosts that may be responsible for your haunting. The deceased should be treated with respect and dignity. However, the majority of investigative groups treat them as if they are objects or trained animals expected to “perform” at the investigator’s will. The EPC recognizes that ghosts are human beings and should be treated humanely.

5- Do they use or rely on Mediums, Psychics or Demonologists?

  The answer depends on whether or not the psychic or medium can back up their claims. Truly gifted Psychic/Mediums are few and far between. Most are born with the ability or acquire the talent after a life-ending encounter, such as a Near Death Experience. Many are used by police and law enforcement agencies worldwide, with good results.  Unfortunately, this indicates that many of those who consider themselves to have psi gifts in fact, do not. Many of these may have had in the past an intuition or two that proved to be true (this can be said for nearly anybody) and thought themselves, and later psychologically convinced themselves, that they possess a rare talent. (It is not a rare talent to think about somebody and an hour later that person calls you; that is usually a coincidence or possibly incidental intuition). Some others are delusional or may suffer from some other type of mental health issue (hearing voices and attributing them to a ‘spirit guide’ does not necessarily make one psychic). Some pseudo-psychic mediums masterfully use trickery to profit from the unsuspecting, especially, and unfortunately, many of whom are in grief. They are, in essence, illusionists or mentalists.

There are groups that have “demonologists” among their key members. Demonology is a field that belongs in the category of the supernatural, as it is more geared towards religious and cultural beliefs. They may carry biases that tend to make every case that they are involved with demonic in essence. This may result in unnecessary, and potentially dangerous ritualistic ‘solutions’.

Evidentially, many investigative groups are operated by psychics, mediums, demonologists or those with strong religious convictions and can therefore be biased in how they carry out an investigation. As well, their input is subjective and although subjective observations and experiences are an important part of a paranormal investigation, it is hard to prove “feelings” or “sensations” hindering any value in the scientific community. The EPC utilizes methods to aid in documenting such events.

To conclude, there are honest individuals who do seem to have an ability to have psychic insight or communicate with the deceased. These people are few and far between.  The EPC works with such a person who has been tried and tested and proven himself in the field to be reliable and capable. Otherwise, the EPC does not, as a rule, have any use for those professing to have psychic insight.
